T-bone Steak Cake!

It has been a long while since anyone's blogged about their baking ventures!

Well, the Husband turned the big 3-0 recently and to celebrate, we hosted a "T"-themed party (for Husband "Tim") - guests were requested to dress as something starting with the letter "T". The prizes for best-dressed also started with the letter "t"- Toblerone, Twix, Tim Tams, tissue paper, toilet paper, towels. I had planned on making the birthday cake - a few months ago a colleague and I had seen in a women's magazine a recipe for a burger cake and we thought it was cute. She ended making a steak cake for her partner's birthday, and when the time came for the "T" party, she suggested I make a "T-bone steak cake" which I thought was brilliant on so many levels!

The Husband loves nothing more than a rare piece of steak, and the cake would adhere to the "T"-theme. My work colleague got her inspiration from other blogs, and emailed me a link to I'm Hungry Too 's steak cake. My decision to make the cake red-velvet with cream cheese frosting 'mashed potato' was solely from this blog, so thanks to her brilliance! Many thanks to other random pictures and blogs on the internet (Hurray for the internet!) that featured various T-Bone steak cakes.

So I started by making a round red-velvet cake using the recipe from the Hummingbird Bakery. Then after it cooled a little on the rack, I started to cut the cake into shape. If you asked me, it looks like South America, with the southernmost point cut off.

South America Red Velvet cake - who ate Patagonia??

I then used store-bought icing and added brown and black to it. This took the LONGEST time. I never knew just HOW MUCH colouring is needed to get the desired brown! Each time I got the desired shade of brown for the 'bone', then the 'fat', I'd peel off a portion and set aside. Then added MORE brown and black and kept on kneading. When I FINALLY got the colour of the 'meat' that I wanted, I wrapped the cake with the rolled icing, and started to make the indentation for the t-bone...

Bone: I spent a lot of time trying to get the bone to look real - made sure the top part of the 'bone' had the hollow bit where the marrow goes, then finally, dotted brown-black gel colouring on the bone and smudged it in.

Fat: I wasn't TOO pleased with how this looked, but it did the job. I rolled some icing flat, then used a chopstick to 'straighten' the strap of 'fat' then wrapped it around.

Grill marks: This wasn't too difficult - I used a chopstick to make indentations into the 'steak' and then simply coloured it in by using a big metal pin covered with black gel colouring (I've just discovered it's called a flower nail, which came with my Wilton's cake decorating set).

The three accompanying veggies were no-brainers - peas and carrots are probably the easiest veggies made with coloured icing; and the mashed potato as mentioned before was the cream cheese frosting (some brown gel colouring added, although I don't know if it made much difference) that usually went atop red-velvet cakes. A friend who is Buttercup Bakeshoppe helped out by stamping 'Happy Birthday' with edible ink on a 'slab of butter' .

Ta Dahhh!!!!!

When I finally finished at 3:30am I couldn't help but wake the birthday boy to admire the finished product! It was to be another 18 hours before the steak was finally cut and the rare-ness revealed.

Steak best-served rare

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (aka the Husband) was thrilled! Happy Birthday, darling!

Toy Story Birthday Cake & Cupcakes

At last! It has been soooo long that I've actually forgotten my password for my sign-in! Yikes!

I actually made this for my younger son's birthday party in April. Yes, yes, I know that it is now the end of June! Sigh, laziness is in my bones - there is really nothing I can do about it :-P Anyway, I just used edible icing images for the cupcakes and put toy figurines on the cake, as per my usual lazy way!

Strawberry and Vanilla Cake

I know I've been out-of-action for a while. Have been soooo lazy :-P I didn't even bake anything for CNY! Decided to make this as strawberries from Korea are in season. But it's just way too hot here! The whipped cream very quickly turned soft and my cake was a big mess. Nevertheless, it was still so, so yummy!!

This is dedicated to Sister No. 3 who celebrated her birthday, er....ahem.... two weeks ago. Still, better late than never right?
Happy Birthday, M! Hope you had a great day!

Ben10 Alien Force Birthday Cake

It was my older son's birthday last week. Since he is a Ben10 fan, of course his cake has to be that theme. We had a party for him and there were twenty kids altogether. So I made cupcakes with the edible icing images which my sister bought. I also made a chocolate cake. The green bit, supposedly the 'Omnitrix' is made of fondant but the figurines were all toy ones.

Star Wars Birthday Cake

It was my hubby's birthday last week and of course, I baked him a chocolate cake. 'Of course' because he loves chocolate cakes. He's a fan of Star Wars, so instead of the usual simple cake that he always has, I put two Star Wars figurines on it. And voila, we have a Star Wars birthday cake! :-P

We all know that I'm as lazy as can be, so there definitely was not gonna be any fiddling with fondant and moulding and all that. Just get two toy figurines and there you have it! I was actually gonna write 'May the force be with you' but that would be a bit too much, don't you think? :-D

Birthday cake

A colleague had wanted to bake for her daughter's birthday but had no time in the end so she ordered a chocolate cake from me. This is not the usual chocolate cake that I make as she specially requested it to be the cupcake recipe that I usually used. As she was gonna feed 30 people, I had to buy a new cake tin to make this and estimation was not very good as it turned out to be a little "shorter" than I anticipated. Nevertheless, they all loved it!

Buttermilk Chocolate Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Donno why my picture quality is so bad. Anyway, had made dinner last night so this was dessert. Saw the recipe on the Donna Hay's 50th Anniversary Issue and got really excited about it coz it looked so beautiful! In the picture, it was actually four layers of cakes but I didn't have two small round tins so I just made do with one big one. Heh....somehow the taste reminded me of the chinese "kai tan goh"(literal translation is still cake but somehow you have to say it in cantonese to understand what I am referring to). = P

Honey Loaf

Decided to bake something a little different. Tried this Honey Loaf recipe from Rachel Allen's bake book. Panicked a little because the recipe asked for 3oog plain flour, but i only had 200g. Tried to be smart and add self-raising flour, and overdid it as well. The taste of the honey really came out nicely, but due to my flour mishap, was a bit dry :(. Oh well, still went well with a nice cup of tea :).

Pink Layer Cake

I had friends over for tea last weekend and I decided that I didn't want to make cupcakes nor a cheesecake (which are what I usually make when I have guests over). I settled on a sponge cake baked in two sandwich tins. I had chocolate buttercream leftover, so I put that in in the middle between the two cakes. The outer frosting was just vanilla buttercream. Pink because I was feeling girly....hhehehehe.
I must admit, I can't do layer cakes very well. I don't know why but they just don't stick! After I cut the first slice, the whole thing just went topsy-turvy! Okay, slight exaggeration there but the top layer slid down a bit. How do I make the two layers stick together? Any suggestions?

Chocolate Cake. Again.

A friend's colleague ordered this chocolate cake for, very obviously from the picture, her mum's birthday. This order was taken through my friend, R, but I didn't know that until yesterday! Let me explain. A week ago, R called me and said "My colleague wants to order your chocolate cake. How much is it?", etc, etc. I told her I'd get back to her. So later, I texted her the price and to let me know if her colleague was still interested in ordering. She replied, "Yes. I have giver her your contact details." Ok, at this point, I just assumed that her colleague would contact me directly to place the order.
A few days later, I texted R and said, "I still haven't heard from your colleague. Please tell her that if she wants the cake for Sat, to order by Thursday". R replied, "Yes, she still wants to order. I have already given her your number and address". And I STILL thought her colleague would call me herself to order the cake. Then yesterday, I texted R and said, "Er, you are not the middleman for your colleague, right? She still hasn't contacted me, so it means she doesn't want to order right?" R replied, "My dear, I confirmed that she wants to order when you texted me". Hmmm..... it would've been very awkward if her colleague turned up at my doorstep to collect a non-existent cake! ;p
Okay, was I a dodo or would you have made the same mistake? Er..........no, don't answer that :)

Valrhona Chocolate Cake

If you read the previous post, you would understand why there was a lack of posts for a week or two. Both sisters from Jakarta and London and yours truly were back in Kuala Lumpur. Why were there no posts from Kay-El and Melbourne, you ask. Er, I did mention in our very first post that we are a group of lazy sisters, did I not? ;p

Anyway, we're all back from our holidays. Well, except sister no. 1 who lives in Jakarta. She is still on holiday and will be so for another month! So, don't be expecting any posts from her for a while yet.

We (my hubby, two sons and I) went to Krabi in Thailand for a few days to celebrate hubby's birthday. My almost-six-year-old and I believe that a birthday is not a birthday without a cake. So, I arranged with the reception to have a cake delivered on his birthday. We ended up having dinner at one of the hotel restaurants, and at the end of our meal, the cake was brought out and the birthday song was sung. It was a chocolate cake (and hubby loves chocolate cakes) and it was a very pretty cake (see picture below - the long piece of chocolate actually has the words 'Happy Birthday' on it. Yes, yes, very 'dodo' of me to take the picture this way round.). The cake tasted ok, nothing to shout about.

So, when we returned to Singapore, I decided to make him another birthday cake. And of course, it had to be a chocolate cake. A Valrhona chocolate cake. It was a birthday cake only in name because we didn't have any wordings nor candles nor birthday song. Er, okay, okay, we had a cake just for fun then!

I didn't have any frosting in-between because I don't have the whatchamacallit, cake splitter??, to split the cake into two. It was just one whole cake with chocolate ganache. It's not very pretty (again, it's my photography skills. Or, ahem, lack of it!) but dang, it sure is goooooooood! And top it off with a scoop (or two) of vanilla ice-cream.....aaaahhhhh, heaven! :D

Strawberry Cake

Tasted this some time ago at my friend's housewarming party so been wanting to make it myself. The strawberries smelled so good! I thought it was quite delicious. =P

Moist Chocolate Cake

My friend had a "devilish desserts" party the other day so I decided to bake our super moist chocolate cake. The last few times I baked this, a lot of people has commented that I should have chocolate inbetween the cake. So, this time round, I slice the cake and pour some of the chocolate sauce on it (since we always have a lot leftover anyway). It definitely made a difference and no wastage!
